Title:  Retirement Depression – Life after athletes

Lead Paragraph:
It is said that a professional sports athlete will die twice – the first time at retirement. One of the problems an athlete may face during or after their career is Depression and anxiety.

Body:
Ian Thorpe is an example of, an Olympic swimmer went to rehab for depression – something he’s been battling for some time. He isn’t the only athlete suffering from the disease; there are actually numerous professional athletes who deal with depression silently. I believe its especially hard battling depression and anxiety when you have not yet retired yet and are still playing the sport. It can affect you performance when they aren’t up to the standard.

Symptoms of depression in men can start overtime when an athlete’s career is coming to an end.  For some athletes it can be hard on them, grasping the fact they are retiring and have to face the real world. In this case, what causes depression would be retiring from the sport they’ve been practicing and perfecting for years. It was a large part of there identity.

Sometimes in cases where a athlete has to retire due to a serious injury, that particular athlete may not feel ready to make the necessary changes required in adapting to that transition and end up getting depressed.

End With Open-Ended Question:
What do you think athletes should do to keep themselves busy after retirement?
